Apartment Information
If your student is planning to move off-campus, read on.
In case you were unaware, we have 3 single student apartment complexes, Chief Joseph, Chinook, and Nez Perce. We think these apartment complexes meet the needs of a lot of residence halls students after they decide they wish to live off-campus. First, our apartment complexes are relatively close to campus, which may be more important than they think in terms of getting to campus quickly in the morning, and avoiding parking costs.
Our rental rates include water, sewer, garbage and the same cable television service your student enjoyed in his or her room this year. Chief Joseph rates even include all of their electrical costs. Additionally, the $150 security deposit they paid for their residence hall will automatically transfer to their apartment. With WSU apartments, first month’s rent is not due until July 1 and, your student can even elect to have their financial aid automatically cover their rent. No large damage deposits and first & last month’s rent are required on signing as they are off-campus. Finally, we have installed wireless Internet service in all three complexes (all our complexes also have DSL service, but at a higher price). Budgeting couldn’t be easier!
Our rental agreement will also protect your student from roommate liability. Unlike a lot of rental agreements off-campus, our rental agreement is with your student alone. In other off-campus apartments, a roommate that falls behind on rent may affect your student’s status as a renter, and their rental history. In our apartments, we are working with your student on their rent and their roommate’s inability to pay is his or her problem, not your student’s. Also, our rental agreement is for 9 months, but can easily be renewed for the summer at reduced rates. Returning apartment residents have the option to store in their apartment over the summer for a minimal payment.
We are great landlords. Our facilities are clean, safe and in good shape. We may not have the newest apartments in town, but we do have a great maintenance staff that fixes problems quickly. One of the concerns our surveys show residence hall students have, when moving off-campus, is the timeliness of landlord response to issues of concern. Sure, lots of off-campus landlords are also great, but no one has as large a maintenance staff as do we. If your student lives with us, they can count on a speedy response.
If your student needs roommates, or wants to join a group looking to fill out their apartment, we can help. When they apply to live in our Single Student Apartments, your student can apply online as an individual or as a group using our application process. Our online bulletin board allows your student to search for others who are looking for roommates, or who want to join their group, so send your student to our web site, www.livingat.wsu.edu/ssa, to learn more about how to find others looking for roommates in our apartments.
Only Washington State University students live in our single student apartment complexes. In off-campus apartments, non-students can live intermixed throughout the complex. The requirement to be a Washington State University student means that your student’s neighbors will be far less likely to create a lot of distractions for them when they want to study. In fact, we will not tolerate in any way the kind of parties you may read about in the papers. Our Apartment Coordinators will respond as needed to help resolve the smaller conflicts, and our office will resolve the larger conflicts by evicting people that hold large parties.
If your student is already planning to move out of the halls, we would love to talk to them regarding how we can help them find a place to live in our single student apartment complexes. Call 335-4577 and let us know how we can help. Or, ask them to visit our web site, www.livingat.wsu.edu/ssa to apply online and find a roommate.
