Frequently Asked Questions Common to Each Hall

Room furnishings

Q: What size sheets should I buy for my bed?
The extra long beds are 36" by 80" with deep pockets.

Q: Can a computer monitor fit on the desk?
Yes, but shelves that are part of the desk may push a CRT monitor toward the front of the desk. A flat screen monitor will help with conserving desk space.

Q: Do the rooms come with chairs?
Yes.

Q: Should I bring a surge protector?
Yes. These are not provided by WSU. Although power surges in the halls are not anymore likely than at your home, you just never know.

Q: Can I paint my room?
No. You can personalize your floor by painting a mural in the hallway after receiving approval from Housing Services.

Computer and Phones

Q: Are phones provided? How about answering machines?
No. Only digital phones available for rent from Housing Services will work in your residence hall room. Voice mail can also be purchased as part of your phone contract. Analog answering machines and fax machines will not work on our digital system.

Q: How do I get a phone hooked up in my residence hall/Where do I turn in the phone contract?
You must sign up for room phone service online. The phone is already in your room, but is only active if you request for and pay for the service.

What is myWSU?
MyWSU serves as the entryway for employees and students to access the information they need. You can add funds to your CougarCard, check your WSU account, add and drop classes, view your pay and benefits information, and much more, all with a single sign-in to WSU's Internet portal The web address appears below:

http://www.my.wsu.edu

What are the computer requirements to use the digital data lines, and use the WSU network, from my room?
The system requirements can be found at:

http://www.scs.wsu.edu/network_support/index.aspx

After that, if you have met the minimum requirements all you have to do is turn your computer on and open up a web browser, go through self-certification and reboot.

Can I have a server in my room?
No. The WSU network is not configured for this volume of traffic.

How many computer hookups are there?
We have one computer port "per pillow." If your room is a double room, there will be two ports; if the room is a designed single, there will be one port.

Does WSU provide Ethernet cords and TV cables?
We do not provide Ethernet cords, but the Custodial staff have a few available that past residents have left behind. If you bring your own, we recommend at least a 9 foot cord, but it is impossible to say for sure how long an Ethernet cord you will need because we cannot say how far away you will place your computer compared to the Ethernet jack.

T.V. cords can be checked out from your Custodian and must be returned when you checkout of your hall.

What equipment will I find in the computer labs?
In all of our labs, you will find digital still cameras, Digital 8mm camcorders, Video Editing equipment featuring Final Cut Pro on high end PowerMac G4 equipment. They will also find CD burners, and scanners, photo quality Epson printers, presentation quality Tektronix color printers and high-speed HP monochrome printers.

Hall Facilities and Amenities

Will my room have wireless access?
If your room is near a public lounge in the hall you might be able to receive the wireless signal. The large public areas of the halls have wireless access and sometimes this "bleeds" over to rooms nearby.

Where can I park my car?
A valid WSU parking permit is required for students who will have a car on campus during the school year. Students living in the residence halls may purchase a Gray or Blue parking permit or contact their Residence Hall Directors to place their names on the priority parking wait list for a Crimson permit. Gray permits are limited in quantity and are sold on a first come, first served basis. Permits may be purchased at the Parking and Transportation Services Office located on the corner of Colorado and D Street (around the corner from the Bookie.) Parking and Transportation Services business hours are 7 AM to 5 PM during summer sessions and vacations and 7 AM to 8 PM during the academic year.

At the beginning of the semester, students may park in Blue, Gray, or Crimson zones without a permit through the first 5 days of classes. However, students will be ticketed for parking in a designated reserved space, disabled parking spaces, loading zones, no parking zones or red curb tow-away zones.

Please visit Parking and Transportation Services web-site for more information about parking and transportation options at www.wsu.edu/parking.

Personal Belongings

What do I need to bring to school with me?
Along with clothing, suggestions for what to bring include a fan, something to carry your toiletries to the bathroom, a laundry basket, bed raisers, and posters and pictures to personalize your room. Checking with your roommate to see what they will bring before you come is a good idea and can save you space.

Please also plan how you will hang your pictures and posters; double-sided tape is difficult to remove and nails leave holes.  You should consider 3M Mounting Products or poster putty.

Can I bring my own microwave?
No. Two or more rooms run off the same circuit breaker, so when a microwave runs in your room it can blow the breaker in the next room. Since microwaves use so much electricity, we do not allow personal microwaves in residence hall rooms. We do allow you to rent Microfridges for $155 per year. Returning residents have priority; incoming students may sign up on a first come, first serve basis.
