Regents Hill Hall Government
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a hall government and what do they do?
Hall government is an organization made up of Regents residents
much like a student government in high school. Hall government
in Regents plans fun activities and fundraisers, as well as participates
in community service, the Residence Hall Association, and campus
activities. They also make hall-wide decisions and decide how
to use the residents’ money.
How and when is your hall government chosen?
In Regents, the government for the following academic year is selected in March. If all of the positions are not filled, then elections are held usually within the first two weeks of the semester. Any resident can run for a position by filling out an application and presenting a short speech at a government meeting.
How can I get in contact with someone on your hall government?
Hall government executives are very accessible since they live right in the hall. Usually their room numbers are posted in the lobby. There also is a hall government mailbox at the front desk where you can leave notes. Finally, you can contact the government advisor, usually the Residence Education Director or Advanced Parapro.
What activities does Regents Hall have during the year?
Regents Hall Government has many traditions. Government execs work with residents who volunteer to come back early to help with move-in and plan activities for Week of Welcome. Events in the past have included games nights and movie nights, tours of campus, flag football, and a hall barbeque. Regents has been very active in campus-wide activities such as Homecoming, Fall Hall Week, and the ASWSU Lobby Decorating Contest. The most famous tradition is Rock-a-thon, which is a 72 hour fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Other traditions include the Luck Charms Dance, All-Hall Clean-Up, t-shirts and events for Mom’s and Dad’s Weekends, and the Thanksgiving Dinner where government execs cook a home-made meal for the entire hall.
What government positions are available at the floor/house level
and how can I get involved?
Each floor has a representative that attends the government meeting each week. Each floor also has a Community Representative (CR) that works with the RA to plan activities for the floor. The best way to get involved for any of these positions is to talk to your RA at your first floor meeting.
What government positions are available at the hall level and how can I get involved?
Government positions in Regents include President, Vice-Pres, Historian, Beautification Chair, RHA Rep, Treasuretary [Combined Secretary & Treasurer], and a CR Liaison. If you have other passions, just let us know!! We’d love to help you get involved! Any positions that are not filled in the Spring are elected the first two weeks of the Fall. Check for election advertisements in the hall or at the front desk or ask your RA.
On what does the government spend my $35 each semester?
$10.00 from every resident’s money is given to the Residence
Hall Association and the rest of the money is given to the hall
government. From that money, each floor is given a certain amount
of money, usually $300.00, to spend however they wish. The rest
of the money is used to plan activities like those described above.
In the past, Regents residents have also decided to donate some
of their money to Relay for Life and other local charities. Finally,
in Regents the government executives are paid stipends for their
service to the hall.
What hall equipment items are available to checkout at the front desk?
At the front desk there are various games and sports equipment as well as cooking utensils for all residents to checkout. Additionally, there is a copy machine available for ten cents per copy. There is also air hockey and pool table equipment to check out for the tables located just upstairs. All kinds of cleaning supplies are available as well as new vacuums. For your convenience, stamps can be purchased at the regular U.S. postal rate.
When do the hall and floor governments meet?
All hall government meeting times vary each semester due to executive schedules, but are typically held on Sunday evenings at 7:30pm in the Formal Lounge. Floor committee meeting times are determined at the beginning of each semester.
Does Regents hall provide any leadership training for people interested in becoming involved?
Yes! Each semester the government executives plan a retreat for all those who wish to become involved and improve their leadership skills. Additionally, there are many floor retreats and a Community Representative (CR) retreat.
I understand Regents Hall receives funds to reduce hall damages.
Tell me more about the program and on what such money can be spent.
Each hall is given a certain amount of money to use in case of
any hall-wide damages. If there is money left over it can be used
to buy any equipment for the hall or make hall improvements. Recent
purchases in Regents include a big screen TV and DVD/VCR for the
Sky Room, vacuums, pool equipment, a new ice machine, toasters,
and microwaves.
How can I get on the move-in crew and help other residents get
settled into the hall at the beginning of the year?
Advertisements for move-in crew are put up at the end of Spring
semester and sign ups are at the front desk. In Regents, move-in
crew volunteers, who are residents returning to the hall, move
in early to help with freshmen move-in and work with the government
executives to plan activities for the Week of Welcome.
