Streit-Perham Hall Government
Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hall government and what do they do?
A hall government is an elected group of residents from the building with the responsibility to manage the budget, host various programs, determine hall improvements, and uphold a constitution. Most importantly, it provides a place for the residents' voices to be heard. All residents are welcome to participate in hall government meetings, even if they do not hold a formal position in government.

How and when is your hall government chosen?
Hall government is chosen by election of executives by the students in the building. All students are encouraged to vote for their executives. Any student living in Streit Perham is welcomed to be a floor representative and be involved with hall government.

How can I get in contact with someone on your hall government?
The best place to start is to talk to either the Residential Education Director (RED) or Advanced Parapro of the building as they serve as the advisors for the group. You may also refer to your Resident Advisor for more information as well.

What activities does Streit Perham Hall have during the year?
Most activities are social in nature (movie nights, karaoke, etc) but the Hall Government can choose to plan a variety of programs. Hall Governments organize the Homecoming team for the building as well as other all-campus events.

What government positions are available at the floor level and how can I get involved?
At the floor level are floor representatives which are open to anyone living in Streit Perham Hall. There is not a limit to the number of residents per floor attending government meetings. Residents can also be involved in their communities by becoming a Community Assistant. If residents are interested they should talk to their Resident Advisor, Advanced Parapro or Residential Education Director.

What government positions are available at the hall level and how can I get involved?
Positions at the hall level include president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, historian, social chair, intramural representative, and RHA representative. If you are interested in running for an open position, talk with your RED or RA for an application at the beginning of the year. Typically elections are held within the first couple of weeks of class.

On what does the government spend my $25 each semester?
The government spends your money on programs, hall improvements, charity events, and other items proposed by government members. To be involved in this spending process, please attend hall government meetings to vote on funding proposals.

What hall equipment items are available to check-out at the front desk?
Items available for check-out from the desk include vacuums, pool equipment, kitchen supplies, board games, sports equipment, and much more. Just make sure you bring your Cougar Card with you as ID is needed to check out supplies.

When do the hall and floor governments meet?
The hall government meets every Sunday night in the Perham Lounge. The executives meet prior to the hall government meeting at a time chosen by the group. Committees can choose when their meeting time is based on the members involved.

I understand Streit Perham Hall receives funds to reduce hall damages. Tell me more about the program and on what such money can be spent.
This program is for items within the hall that are damaged. These items can include gaming tables, furniture for the lounges, artwork, ice machines, light fixtures, televisions, and much more. The less the hall damages items in the hall, the more money is available for improvement purchases.

How can I get on the move-in crew and help other residents get settled into the hall at the beginning of the year?
While the desk assistants and Resident Advisors provide information to new residents during move in, Streit Perham would enjoy having your assistance during move-in. If you are interested in assisting during move-in please talk to the Residential Education Director at 509-335-5232 as they would be happy to discuss how you can welcome new students.
