Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hall government and what do they do?
A hall government is an elected group of residents from the building with the responsibility to manage the budget, host various programs, determine hall improvements, and uphold a constitution. Most importantly, it provides a place for the residents' voices to be heard. All residents are welcome to participate in hall government meetings, even if they do not hold a formal position in government.

How and when is your hall government chosen?
Hall government is chosen by election of executives by the House membership in the spring. Any open board positions and floor senators are elected in the first few weeks of them fall semester.

How can I get in contact with someone on your hall government?
You can refer to the posted office hours in each hall lobby and on the government office door (located in the Scott ground floor stairwell), attend government meetings, talk to your Resident Advisor or the Residential Education Director, leave a note in the government mailbox at the front desk, or look at the Scott-Coman website, http://www.wsu.edu/~schall/ for contact information for hall government executives.

What activities does Scott-Coman Hall have during the year?
The activities consist of BBQs, movie nights, game nights, formal dances, floor competitions, and informative discussions concerning serious topics, study groups, and other holiday parties.

At the floor level are senators which are chosen by campaigning for election via your floor. There is not a limit to the number of residents per floor attending government meetings; however, each floor is limited to two voting senators at meetings. Residents can also be involved in their communities by becoming a Community Assistant. If residents are interested they should talk to their Resident Advisor, Advanced Parapro or Residential Education Director.

What government positions are available at the hall level and how can I get involved?
Positions at the hall level include president, vice-president, secretary, historian, facilities coordinator, webmaster, activities coordinator, and two RHA representatives. Elections occur each spring and if positions are still open, then again in the fall.

The government spends your money on programs, hall improvements, charity events, and other items proposed by government members.

What hall equipment items are available to check-out at the front desk?
Items available for check-out from the desk include TV/VCR, pool, foosball and ping pong equipment, kitchen supplies, board games, sports equipment, and much more.

When do the hall and floor governments meet?
The hall government meets every Sunday at 8:00pm in the Coman Formal Lounge. The executives meet Sunday at 7:00pm prior to the hall government meeting. Floor meetings are required the 1st three weeks of each semester and any other meetings called by the Resident Advisor.

I understand Scott-Coman Hall receives funds to reduce hall damages. Tell me more about the program and on what such money can be spent.
This program is for items within the hall that are damaged. These items can include gaming tables, furniture for the lounges, artwork, ice machines, light fixtures, and televisions. The less the hall damages items in the hall, the more money is available for the above purchases.

How can I get on the move-in crew and help other residents get settled into the hall at the beginning of the year?
Scott-Coman does not have a formal move-in crew, but the desk assistants help provide any information that new residents need. If you are interested in assisting please talk to the Residential Education Director at 509-335-2123 as they would be happy to discuss how you can welcome new students.
