Orton Hall Government
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a hall government and what do they do?
A: The hall government is the voice of the residents in Orton Hall. The hall government holds weekly meetings which are used to determine resident and residence life staff programming and the appropriate funding for these programs.

Q: How and when is your hall government chosen?
A: The government elections are held one a year, twice if needed, during the year. Spring elections are the primary elections, with a fall election used to fill positions not filled during the spring elections.

Q: How can I get in contact with someone on your hall government?
A: You can contact our Hall President, Amber Smit or the Advisor/Residential Education Director, Star Sherman.

Q: What activities does Orton Hall have during the year?
A: The biggest activity that Orton Hall has been known for historically is “Haunted Hall” in late October. Another big campus wide program is a 3 on 3 basketball tournament held in the spring. There are lots of activities that are just within the realm of Orton Hall.

Q: What government positions are available at the floor/house level and how can I get involved?
A: The executive positions in Hall Government have been filled (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, Director of Programming, Director of Public Relations, and RHA Representative), but we still need residents to represent each floor. Still, you do not need to hold a position to participate in hall government.

Q: On what does the government spend my $25 each semester?
A: The money that is allocated goes into many different areas; floor funds for Resident Advisors to program with, hall programs, stipends for the executive members of hall government, Week Of Welcome activities, and appreciation activities.

Q: What hall equipment items are available to check-out at the front desk?
A: We have various sports, kitchen, and cleaning equipment. We also have lots of games for that late night entertainment with your floor mates.

Q: When do the hall and floor governments meet?
A: The Orton Hall government meets Sunday nights at 8:30pm in the 12th floor lounge (one of the best views in the Pullman area).

Q: Does Orton Hall provide any leadership training for people interested in becoming involved?
A: Orton Hall has leadership training through its hall government, but also contacting your Resident Advisor is another great way to get involved.

Q: I understand Orton Hall receives funds to reduce hall damages. Tell me more about the program and on what such money can be spent.
A: Basically, as long as there are no damages to the building or any excessive cost for cleaning; we get money! The money can be used for permanent hall fixtures as a reward for having no damages. In the past the money has been used for TV’s, pool table, foosball table, copy machine, and an ice machine. There are many other areas we can use the money as well.

Q: How can I get on the move-in crew and help other residents get settled into the hall at the beginning of the year?
A: Before you leave for summer break, be sure to get in touch with your Hall President or your Residential Education Director.
